​​Building Meaningful Connections in a Digital Age

Most bank customers and potential customers want to be able to access their accounts and conduct transactions quickly and easily. Having a strong digital platform as part of your organization enables you to offer that convenience to them. However, embracing digital services doesn’t mean you have to abandon personal connections. Use digital as an entry point – a “hello” to people.  Once you’ve established that initial connection, you can follow up with a phone call or face-to-face meeting.
 
Here are ways to use digital options to build meaningful connections:
 
  • Start on social media. LinkedIn is the best business social media platform, and you will find existing and potential customers there. Go through your connections and select a few people to connect with each week. Message them and ask if you can meet for coffee or at their business. Emphasize that you’re looking to help to strengthen your connection and not sell them anything.
 
  • Create video messages. Putting a short video clip (less than 30 seconds) on LinkedIn or embedding it in an email is a great, cost-effective way to get attention for you and your business from current and potential customers. You can talk about community banking, why you love your community, and why you enjoy being a banker. Make sure you have the proper lighting and message. Practice until you can say your message naturally. The key is to have your personality shine through even if it’s not perfect.
 
  • Harness strong content messages. If you’re not comfortable being on a video, you can use the written word to reach a large number of people on a digital platform. Develop business tips or other useful information and share it through a blog on your website, a newsletter, social media posts, or emails to customers and potential customers.
 
Whichever digital platform you use, you can make your message meaningful. You can come across warm and welcoming in words and video and make every contact point positive and friendly. The key is to make it a priority to create connections and be yourself.
